Resort Weeks

Resort weeks are the original timeshare programs first developed to allow people to own an accommodation in popular vacation destinations.  Developers of these programs would purchase a block of condominiums and divide each one into 52 weekly segments.  These time segments are then sold with defined use rights.  A weeks week is a block of time consisting of seven consecutive days in a timeshare resort.  Weeks normally have a predetermined check in check out date, usually Friday, Saturday or Sunday.  Different resorts have different check in check out days, so its always a good idea to consult with the resort directly for this information prior to purchasing.  Check in-out days are also available in the RCI and II exchange directories.

There are several types of week weeks consisting of floating time, fixed time, floating weeks and fixed weeks, as well as special holiday weeks such as Christmas or New Years weeks which are sold at a premium.   In each case however, they always consist of a 7 day consecutive use period.  This simply means that you check in, occupy the unit for 7 consecutive nights and then check out.  Fixed, Floating, and Holiday weeks are explained in more detail in the Timeshare Glossary.

Some weeks resorts are also points resorts where some units in the resort have been placed into a points program by the developer.  This is why you will often run across both types of programs in the same resort.  This can be confusing to potential owners at times but there is a simple explanation.  Most resorts sell out over a period of several years.   In recent years Points programs have gained in popularity and many timeshare developers have jumped on the Points bandwagon.  The primary difference between a Points week and weeks week is the flexibility afforded by points over the the weeks.  With points the owner is no longer required to use the entire week for seven consecutive days.  Because one can spend the number points equating to one or more nights the owners of points programs can stay for a shorter period of time.  The points can also be converted to other forms of use such as rental cars, activities, airfare etc.  There is however a heavy premium paid when using points for anything other than a full 7 day stay.

Because of this premium, the best value in timeshare ownership today is still the old fashioned weeks week.  For more information on point programs see Point Programs.
